From the Collection

From the Collection is an ongoing archive project of collected second-hand ephemera. Much of it documents 20th century photography as a vernacular hobby and cultural activity. The collection includes snapshots and studio portraits, photo albums, consumer-grade cameras, home darkroom kits, vintage photography guides and magazines, and a few examples of 19th century processes. This collection was referenced in art works (see "Autoportraits" and "The Presence of Absence") created between 2003-2013. In 2020, it is being reexamined again as source material for the site "IN Photo History", juxtaposing the vintage images from the collection with descriptions of what information can be obtained from it, such as photographer information, location, dates, notations, photographic techniques, clothing and fashion analysis, etc. By citing this collection in a public repository, future researchers may contribute to posts and reference these currently obscure individuals.
