From the Collection: Squiggle Dress

The original image, as mounted on the photographer's
card. The low-contrast and washed-out blacks may be
from fading, or it may have been an aesthetic choice,
lingering from the Pictorialist Movement.
Digitally edited to down-play the foxing stains
and to enhance the contrast

This portrait was made by Phillips & Co. in Lafayette, Indiana, between 1923-1935. The young woman sitter wears a puffy, short hairstyle with hair swooped over her forehead like bangs. Her dress is very unusual, and I am hoping to someday know more about it. It is a dark color, loose fitting, longer sleeved garment, with a thick, white piping in the form of squiggles along the neck and sleeves. Is it a stylish dress, a performance costume, an ethnic design? Have you seen a similar style dress in any other historical images?
